Boating Myths
Myth: Lakes don’t exhibit very rough seas. The fact that lakes aren’t vast and limitless is what can make them dangerous. Being shallow than the oceans, lakes have waves that are steeper and closer together for any given amount of wind. Surrounded by relatively close shorelines compared with the ocean, lake waves are bouncing off opposing shores and amplifying other waves, creating confused seas with waves often twice the height by the wind alone.
Myth: Sailboats always have the right of way. Sail boaters may think they always have the right of way but when running on its engine a sailboat is just another powerboat.
Myth: The more blades a propeller has the faster the boat goes. The fastest boats on the water, are drag-racing hydroplanes and they have only two propeller blades and they put out thousands of horsepower to the water. Single-blade props are the most efficient, but they would cause a lot of vibration. More blades minimize vibration, but they don’t make a boat go any faster.
Myth: A boat is safer in a slip than moored. . A boat in a slip is subject to the skill of the boat’s skipper next to it and the wave action pushing it that can cause damage. A moored boat faces only one variable: the weather. As long as the mooring tackle is secure, the boat will ride out waves and swing along with the wind without endangering another boats or by the dock.
Myth: Boats can endure weather and other elements. Like an expensive automobile a boat needs to be maintained and protected from the very environment it is made for.
