Boat Sleepovers
One of the benefices of a boating vacation is you can save the expense of a motel by sleeping onboard on an extended trip. But there are some things to know before you do your sleepover.
Choosing any place to sleep away from home is all about location. Your choice of anchorage is the key to a good night sleepover, and a safe one. For that reason, you’ll want to choose a small, protected cove, not just dropping anchor anywhere on the water. You don’t want to be in “traffic”, and weather is an issue. Conditions can change in a hurry, so scout out a location that has some protection.
For overnighting, it’s also a good idea to have an anchor at least one size larger than recommended for your boat. So if you use a 10-pound anchor for a 20-foot boat have a 15-pound anchor, or one pound of anchor for every two feet of boat.
If you travel a lot on land, you probably have a favorite motel/hotel you always use. So when you’re boating, take some time to scout out possible sites for an overnighter. It’s better to already have a site than to start searching when you need a place. Practice your setup in the daylight, and do a “dry run” practicing how you will anchor and tie off on any trees. You don’t want to drift away.
A boat “overnighter” can be an unique, fun and exciting experience, but it needs some planning. You can’t just pull over and sleep on the side of the road, and you can’t do that on a boating overnighter. And make sure you boat can handle an “overnighter” as well.
