What the “Well Dressed” Boater Wears
Many people when invited to “go boating” approach it as if they were invited to a picnic, showing up in shorts, t-shirts and “flip flops”. But, even on a dry land, a picnic outing can be ruined by unpredictable weather, and a sudden change in the weather while boating can be even more unpredictable and often dangerous.
On any boating excursion, choosing the proper “boating apparel” is important, as what you wear will have an effect on your boating experience, and it can be more than just being too hot, too cold or too wet; it could be dangerous if something unexpected happens. Choosing appropriate clothing ensures that you are properly insulated if and when the weather changes.
First, check the weather. Know what weather is forecasted before, during and after you’ll be boating. Keep in mind that the weather on the water will be at least 10 degrees cooler than on land. The boat owner will have the basic safety gear available on board: flotation devices, life jackets, etc., so keep in mind that you need to be able to wear those safety devices as well.
Choose “layered” clothing. Showing up in a bathing suit, or shorts and t-shirt won’t protect you in a sudden squall. Bring clothing that can be taken on and off easily – slacks and a jacket to wear over you swim suit; once on the water, you can’t run home to get a sweater. Have a dry set of clothes in a plastic bag that won’t take up too much space in case it rains.
