What Kind of Boater Are you?
There are almost as many types of boats as there are places to boat in. The types of boats available fall into four general categories, depending on their primary source of power and how they are used. All boats fall in to two basic categories; Power Boats and Sail Boats.
Power Boats are obviously boats whose primary form of power is from either an inboard or outboard motor. These are the hot rods of boating.
Sail boats are, just as obviously, boats that depend primarily on wind and sails for motion. Sailboats may have outboard engines used only in emergencies and calms to get safely back to shore.
Within those two basic types, there are boats used for specific activities or jobs:
Fishing Boats can be large fishing boats used by professional fishing companies or small powered boats for weekend. recreational fishing.
The most diverse of boat type is the recreational/watersport boats that are specifically designed and used for water skiing, wakeboarding, swimming and general recreational use, such as casual cruising/fishing outings with family and friends. What boat you need depends on what you want to do when you’re on the boat and on the water.
But all boats need to be maintained, and they need to be protected.
“The sea is a cruel mistress” is a saying used by sailors traveling the world’s oceans; but it is just as relevant for the weekend sailor as well. All boats need to be maintained and protected from the very elements it encounters. Wind, rain, sun and water are the essential elements of boating, but they are also the enemies of boats whether at sea or in port.
