The Rites of Spring
For many boaters boating in a seasonal event; and when finally the winter snows and ice finally melt, it’s time to take the boat out of winter storage and put it where it’s supposed to be: on the water.
For many boaters, the “Rite of Spring” is preparing their boat. So here’s a quick check list of necessary preparation and cleaning projects necessary to get out and back safely in your “inaugural cruse”.
Fuel System: check for leaks and damage, especially on fuel hoses for softness, brittleness and cracking; check connections. Verify all fittings and clamps are secure and replace necessary. Check the engine, exhaust and ventilation systems.
Belts, Cables & Hoses: Check belts, cables and hose: They can become brittle and crack during storage. Ensure belts fit tightly around pulleys to prevent slipping. Cracks or swells on throttle, shift and steering control cables may mean internal corrosion and eventual failure.
Electric System: Inspect electrical connections for clean, corrosion free connections. Remove corroded terminals and use a wire brush to clean, as well as cable ends. Charge and test the battery. Have a qualified technician regularly inspected the electrical systems.
Fluids: Check engine oil, power steering, power trim reservoirs and coolant levels.
Propellers & Hulls: Inspect propellers for dings, pitting, cracks and distortion.
Safety Gear: Ensure all life jackets are in good condition and that there are enough for all on board.
Finally, make sure you’re boat itself is protected and is ready to sail by investing in high quality protective canvas coverings, from CMC Canvas LLC.
