Maryland‘s rivers and bays combined with more than 400 miles of water to the Chesapeake Bay, and nearly 35 miles of accessible water an approximately 550 marinas, 41,000 in-water boat slips, and some 261 public boat ramps, along with additional public access sites for boating. Annual recreational boating expenditures totaled over $2.2 billion and Maryland registered 188,623 pleasure boats; 2,739 commercial boats; and more than 8,000 vessels principally used in n Maryland. Even in Maryland’s extensive waters, that’s a lot of traffic; and it’s still growing.
The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is one of the many services provided by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, a volunteer organization assisting the Coast Guard to ensure boating safety. A free examination and safety check for equipment carried or installed on a vessel as well as the vessel’s condition. VSC requirements often exceed Federal requirements regarding a boat’s equipment and condition, and If a boat that meets or exceeds VSC requirements, the owner is awarded a Vessel Safety Check Decal “Seal of Safety”. The VSC is a FREE public service in the interest of boating safety.
