Choosing the Right Fuel and Oil
Keeping you boats engine well-maintained is essential for making the most of your time on the water. The right type of oil and fuel is critical for both performance and extending the life of your boat.
There are two categories of marine outboard engines: two-stroke and four-stroke. Most of the new engines used today are four-stroke, but there are a large number of two-stroke engines still in use, and the lubrication requirements between a two-stroke and four-stroke engine are different. In two-stroke engines, oil is mixed with the fuel and lubricates the engine as it passes through. It the oil burns along with the fuel and is released by the exhaust system. Four-stroke engines are similar to automobiles in that the oil is pumped and returned to a sump.
Newer boat engines are engineered with reduced emissions and extended lifespans, but these advanced technologies place severe demands on engine lubricants, so it’s critical to choose the correct lubricant for your boats engine.
Marine oil is not interchangeable with automobile oil, and using the right lubricant a must. The reasons for this is obvious: water and wear.
Corrosion caused by water is a primary concern. Automobile oils are not designed to provide high level of corrosion protection that marine engines require. And because four-stroke outboard engines run faster than a car engine and spend longer periods at extremes of speed and also spend longer time out of use they have very specific requirements for anti-wear protection that automobile oils don’t provide
Using the right fuel is critical to the performance of your outboard engine, just as protecting your boat from weather and water and wear is essential for your boat.
