Boating Myths
MYTH: Boating is expensive. Boats may be expensive, but boating is affordable. The major expensive is the boat itself, but if you can afford to finance an automobile, you can finance a boat just as well. A brand new boat can be financed for around $250 a month.
Boats with a galley, berth and “head” (toilet) can deduct the interest on the boat as if it was a second home. Consult a tax attorney for possible deductions. Boat shows not only show what boats are available, but often offer special deals if you buy a new boat there.
MYTH: Boating takes up time I can’t afford. Boating is flexible; you can sail when you have the time and when you want to. That means you can fit your boating around your schedule. Try to do that with golfing or attending a football or baseball game!
MYTH: Boating is boring. Just ask another boater: boating is anything but boring. There’s water-skiing, fishing, Island hopping, picnicking, swimming, sightseeing places you can’t see from your car. It’s also a great way to spend quality time with your family.
MYTH: Boat rentals are expensive. In fact, it’s the opposite. Rentals can be very reasonable. On top of this, many launch ramps in local municipalities are free, and there are many to choose from. And once you’re out on the water, the sun, fresh air and the sights are always free.
MYTH: Boats require a lot of maintenance. Modern boats require very little maintenance; at least no more than with your car. Just some preventative maintenance your dealer can do at minimal cost. Winter storage may require an engine oil change and general cleaning.
