Boating and the Creation of Cultures

custom canvas - boatingOne of the biggest advantages of traveling by water was that it affords man far greater mobility and able to travel faster and farther than they could by land. In addition to being used for trade, boats and later “ships” acted not only as a source of transportation but a means of defense.

The earliest depiction of a boat is a small painted disc found in Kuwait, dated around 5000 BC and showing a sail boat. Sails were “modern technology”, as advanced as our space ships are today. The development of sail technology allowed advanced cultures and their explorers to travel further using a technology that used natural propulsion of the wind, rather than the backbreaking labor of using paddles or oars.

With the evolution of sails, masts and rigging were developed and improved, and navigation and the use of maps documented what was discovered and known decreasing the chance of being stranded or lost at sea.

Explorers still find new discoveries. We may have found and mapped most of the land, but explorers still have new challenges. Having conquered the surface, we now can use new types of “boats” to explore new worlds beneath the surface and far in space.

That would never have happened without someone, long ago, building a boat and ventured into the unknown. The adventure still exists, but you need a boat able to safely take you “there and back again”.
